How I Approach Family Sessions With Young Children

If you’ve ever worried about how your kids will behave during family photos, you’re definitely not alone.

Honestly? Most parents show up a little nervous. They worry their kids won’t sit still, someone will melt down, or the session won’t go according to plan.

But the truth is… kids are kids. And I never expect perfection.

When I arrive at your session, I show up as myself, with a smile on my face and no pressure for anyone to perform. Some kids are immediately ready to chat and explore. Others need a little time to warm up first. Either way is completely okay.

I take time to read the room and meet your family where they’re at.

I get down on your child’s level, ask questions, and genuinely engage with them. If they want to show me their favorite toy, I’m all in. If they want to be silly, we let them be silly. If they need a snack break or a moment with mom, we pause and go at their pace.

Some of the best moments happen in between the “everyone look at me” photos anyway.

That’s one of the reasons I love in-home and relaxed family sessions so much. Your kids are in an environment where they feel safe and comfortable, which allows real personalities and genuine connection to come through naturally.

And if you’re currently planning your session and feeling stuck on outfits, I also put together a real-life guide on what to wear for family photos in Spokane to help make the process feel a little less overwhelming.

We’ll absolutely grab those classic images where everyone is looking at the camera, but I’m also paying attention to the in-between moments:

  • the laughter after someone makes a silly face,
  • your toddler running barefoot through the yard,
  • your child reaching for your hand,
  • the cuddles after they need a quick reset.

Those are usually the moments families end up loving most.

I also love getting kids involved during the session. Sometimes I’ll ask if they want to be my assistant for a few minutes, and they almost always light up when they feel included in the process.

At the end of the session, I always bring a little surprise for them too, just a small way to make the experience feel fun and memorable.

My goal isn’t just to deliver beautiful images.

I want your session to feel relaxed, connected, and enjoyable for everyone involved. No pressure. No expectation that your kids need to sit perfectly still the entire time.

Just your family being yourselves.

And honestly? That’s where the magic usually happens.
